UK Savings Week is here, running from 22 – 28 September, and it’s all about finding a savings habit that works for you. Whether you’ve got nothing set aside yet, a small pot you’d like to grow, or savings that could be working harder, this week is a good time to take a fresh look at your savings.
The aim of UK Savings Week is simple: to give everyone the tools, ideas, and confidence to feel more in control of their money. Because savings aren’t just numbers on a page, they mean peace of mind, breathing space and the freedom to say yes to opportunities that come along.
Why savings matter
Research shows why it’s so important to build even a small savings buffer. Almost a quarter of workers (22%) say money worries have affected their performance at work, and one in five have taken time off due to financial stress. For younger adults (18 – 24 year olds), that rises to one in three.
The good news is that even a small amount of savings can make a big difference. Those who are able to save regularly, no matter how much they put away, have reduced anxiety and are more able to deal with life’s shocks, such as an unexpected bill. Encouragingly, most people (81%) believe they could save at least an extra £10 a month if they wanted to, including almost half of those who currently have no savings.
Your first steps made simple
It doesn’t need to be complicated and you don’t need a big lump sum to start saving. You could try adding £10 into a savings account on payday – think of it as paying yourself first. Or, if you prefer, set aside a few pounds each week. Both approaches work, it’s about choosing the amount and savings style that fits your lifestyle.
Don’t worry if you have never been a saver before. The research shows that almost half of those who classed themselves as spenders in the past have changed course, and now identify themselves as savers – so there’s proof that habits can change!
Don’t do it alone
Sometimes the easiest way to start is by talking to someone you trust about money, something many younger adults are already doing. Or for some extra help, UK Savings Week offers tips, savings calculators, and guidance on finding savings accounts that can make your money work harder.
So if you’ve ever wished that you had a savings buffer to give you a bit of breathing space, or that you had a little tucked away to let you treat yourself or someone you love, UK Savings Week is the perfect time to take that first step.
Confidence. Freedom. Peace of mind. It all starts here.
